Shadow Shot Sunday -Ripples

I went hiking yesterday and found these watery shadows in a glacier fed lake high in the Rockies. I loved the colours in the rocks and the way the light played with the ripples on the water.

Shadow Shot Sunday
This shadow is cast by one of my favourite pieces of street art...ever.
It's called "The Family of Man" and stands outside the Calgary Board of Education building in downtown Calgary. The scale of this piece is stunning. Each figure is 21 feet tall.
The previous post on this blog shows other shots of this sculpture if you're interested.

Shadow Shot Sunday

In the post below are a few shots taken on a small island off the West Coast of Canada. There are some carved faces in that posting, all from one pillar on an old bakery building.
I saved this shot for Shadow Shot Sunday.
I love the deep shadows that define this ancient face, especially the ones which shade the eyes making it unclear exactly what this man is watching...or what he might be thinking. I love the deep chisel marks and the natural fissures in the wood. This guy has aged beautifully; fierce, strong and proud.

Shadow Shot Sunday

Grape Conversations!
I was at the Farmers Market last weekend and popped into this barn of a wine storm housed in an old aircraft hangar...the site for the market is on what used to be a barracks. Two guys were having an animated discussion on what wine to buy (the place has a lot of choice!) and I whipped out my camera just as they stopped waving their hands around and came to an agreement.

Hang on to that planet!
.Okay! I admit it! I manipulated this image! I did rotate it through 180 degrees but I couldn't help myself! I liked the way the shadow looks like Superman holding desperately onto planet earth...perhaps to keep it from hurtling out of the solar system!
The young woman doing the handstand in the middle of a downtown green-space was full of the joys of spring. She wasn't really hanging onto the planet in quite the way this photo would have you believe but she did have a firm grip on life!
Hope you are enjoying yourself as much as she was on this Shadow Shot Sunday.

Watching the Gorillas
I went to the zoo last weekend and since the weather was glorious and sunny I got some great shadow shots and had a hard time picking just one...but I liked this one. It's the happy shadows of lots of people leaning against the glass railing to the gorilla enclosure. They are all watching the new baby gorilla enjoying being outside for the first time! You don't get to see the baby but I can see at least two shadows taking photos and a kid swinging on the rail!

Shadow Shot Sunday

.
I went for a bike ride this weekend and stopped on an old bridge to admire the river below...and the shadow. This river's not for swimming though. It's glacial meltwater and cold as all-get-out!

Shadow Shot Sunday

I took this picture at a local art gallery. The shadows are spotlights. Once again, the guy looking at the artwork was too absorbed to notice me shooting his shadow.

Shadow Shot Sunday
Two shots this week, one taken outside in my local park where a group of birch trees cast their shadows on the snow.
And one taken inside at my local mall.
This patch of light made for some very effective shadows and people don't seem to mind you pointing your camera at their feet. This w
oman, busy texting, didn't notice me at all..

The days are getting longer, the sun a little warmer and soon the spring thaw will begin. These two girls sitting on a dock by a Saskatchewan lake cast long shadows in the evening sunlight.
Two minutes later a guy wobbled out onto the ice on an ancient motorbike and rode off into the sunset...probably heading home for supper. I wondered how he made the journey in summer when all the ice had gone.
